Mid Century Home is Modern Again

Prior to the purchase of this 1950’s California-styled ranch on Madison’s west side, we were asked to develop a plan and budget for removing the existing carport and adding a stylized entry to the home. The new owners also wanted to improve the energy efficiency of the house and add a brick fireplace in the great room. Due to neighborhood covenants, we would be required to submit designs to an architectural review board prior to construction.

The plane of the existing roof line was used to inform our design. The garage and front entry were constructed under extended roof planes. Exposed timbers, 1950’s brick, and custom Pella windows maintain the Mid Century modern aesthetic. A former glass roofed three season porch that was essentially rotted from the house was rebuilt and made to be a heated living space. Regrading the site was required to solve drainage issues and to provide a clean palette for the new landscape design.
